Shock & Vibration Standards Explained

JSS 55555, BR 3021 NSS, MIL-STD-810H, MIL-S-901D, MIL-STD-167-1A, IEC 60068-2 and ASTM D4169 — what each one actually demands, and how those requirements translate into isolator selection.

Wire rope isolators are almost always specified against a qualification standard rather than a simple load figure. This page explains what each of the major shock and vibration standards actually demands, which industries use them, and how the requirements translate into isolator selection. JSS 55555 — Indian Joint Services Specification

JSS 55555 is the environmental testing specification for military and naval electronic equipment supplied to the Indian armed forces. If you are supplying to the Indian Navy, Army, Air Force, DRDO or their prime contractors, this is almost certainly the governing document.

What it demands

  • Sine vibration — typically 5–33 Hz in three constant-displacement bands: 5–14 Hz at ±1.25 mm, 14–23 Hz at ±0.45 mm, and 23–33 Hz at ±0.125 mm, one hour per axis across three axes. A lighter single-band variant (5–33 Hz at ±0.125 mm) applies to some onboard equipment categories.
  • Random vibration (RVSS screens) — a power spectral density profile such as +3 dB/octave from 20–80 Hz, a plateau of 0.02–0.04 g²/Hz to 350 Hz, then −3 dB/octave to 2000 Hz. Screen B at 0.04 g²/Hz gives an overall 6.06 Grms.
  • Shock — half-sine pulses, commonly 20 g for 11 ms in all three axes.
  • Climatic tests — damp heat (Test 10), temperature cycling and salt spray, where all-metal isolators pass inherently.

What it means for isolator selection

The constant-displacement sine bands are the critical part. Because acceleration rises with the square of frequency at constant displacement, the highest input occurs at the top of each band. If your natural frequency lands inside a band, the resonant dwell is amplified by roughly 3.5× and must still stay below fragility. The selector scans every band, finds the worst dwell response and reports it.

BR 3021 — Naval Shock Standard (NSS)

BR 3021 is the naval shock standard used for equipment mounted on warship decks, widely applied on Indian Navy programmes alongside JSS 55555 vibration. Grade 2, the common grade for deck-mounted equipment, specifies:

  • Vertical: 50 g half-sine, 11 ms (ΔV ≈ 3.44 m/s)
  • Horizontal (athwartships and fore-aft): 22 g half-sine, 11 ms (ΔV ≈ 1.51 m/s)

These are severe inputs. A 50 g pulse into unisolated electronics is destructive; the isolator's job is to bring the transmitted level below the equipment's fragility — often 10–20 g — while staying inside its rated stroke. Attenuation of 70–80% is achievable with correctly sized wire rope isolators.

Ship motion also matters

Naval selections must additionally survive quasi-static ship inclinations, typically roll ±12° and pitch ±2°. These generate a lateral force of m·g·sinθ and shift load between mounts — the selector calculates both and checks the worst-loaded isolator.

MIL-S-901D — US Navy high-impact shock

MIL-S-901D is a test-based rather than level-based standard: equipment is physically struck rather than driven to a numerical g level. Three test machines are used depending on weight:

  • Lightweight (under ~250 lb) — hammer blows on a standard anvil plate.
  • Mediumweight (250–7,400 lb) — a 3,000 lb hammer on a standard deck fixture.
  • Heavyweight — the floating shock platform (barge test) with underwater explosive charges.

Grade A equipment must remain fully operational after the test; Grade B must not become a hazard. Because there is no published input pulse, designers work to an equivalent SDOF input for sizing — commonly a 60 g class pulse for deck-mounted Grade A — then confirm by test. It is normally paired with MIL-STD-167-1A for vibration.

MIL-STD-810H — US DoD environmental engineering

MIL-STD-810H is the world's most widely referenced environmental test standard, used far beyond the US military. Two methods matter for isolation:

  • Method 514.8 — Vibration. Tailored profiles for jet aircraft, propeller aircraft, helicopters, ground vehicles and truck transport. A common cargo-aircraft profile plateaus around 0.04 g²/Hz.
  • Method 516.8 — Shock. Functional shock typically 20 g for 11 ms; crash-hazard shock up to 40 g; transit drop and bench handling shocks.

The standard's philosophy is tailoring — you are expected to derive levels from the actual life-cycle environment rather than apply a generic table. The selector's MIL-STD-810H preset gives representative levels that you should adjust to your equipment's real mission profile.

MIL-STD-167-1A — Shipboard vibration

Covers Type I environmental vibration for equipment installed on US Navy ships: sine testing from 4 to 33 Hz at constant displacement, with an exploratory sweep, a variable-frequency sweep and an endurance dwell at each resonance found. The endurance dwell is the demanding part — equipment sits at its own resonance for a sustained period, so a well-damped isolator that limits the resonant peak is essential.

IEC 60068-2 — International environmental testing

The IEC 60068 series is the civil and industrial counterpart to the military standards, used for telecom cabinets, instrumentation, seismic installations and industrial machinery:

  • IEC 60068-2-6 — sine vibration (Test Fc), commonly 10–58 Hz at ±0.35 mm then constant acceleration above.
  • IEC 60068-2-27 — mechanical shock (Test Ea), half-sine typically 15 g / 11 ms.
  • IEC 60068-2-64 — broadband random vibration (Test Fh).

ASTM D4169 and ISTA — road and distribution transport

Where equipment is shipped rather than installed, the governing documents are distribution standards. ASTM D4169 defines distribution cycles combining truck vibration, handling drops and compression; ISTA 3E and related procedures test palletised loads. Truck vibration profiles typically produce 0.5–0.7 Grms with severe pothole shocks of 20–30 g.

Frequently asked questions

Does the isolator itself get certified to these standards?

No — standards qualify the equipment as installed. The isolator, mounting plate and fasteners are tested together as a system. Adonitech supplies the calculations and material certification that support your qualification programme; first-article testing then proves the assembly.

Can one isolator satisfy several standards at once?

Often yes. Naval projects routinely combine JSS 55555 vibration with BR 3021 shock. The selector evaluates vibration and shock cases simultaneously and reports a combined compliance matrix, so a single model can be shown to pass every requirement.

What if my customer's specification differs from the presets?
